Kayaking in theThousand Islands

Written by

The Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River, only 29 miles from ARO's Black River Rafting outpost in Watertown, NY, is an outstanding destination to explore by kayak and canoe.

  • ·         Over 1,800 islands, most with natural wooded shorelines
  • ·         Outstanding fishing
  • ·         Emerald green waters so clear you can see the bottom to depths of over fifty feet
  • ·         Historic sunken ships, many visible from the surface

Bring your own boat, or rent one in the region, spend a half day or a week exploring and camping. River Bay Adventure Inn has a variety of kayaks for short and long term rental and is planning to add some guided trips this summer. They are located in Chippewa Bay and will transport boats to your chosen starting point.

Parks Canada and New York State have areas for camping and picnicking throughout the islands, many accessible only by water

The Thousand Islands provide some of North America’s most interesting fresh water paddling.
